They're everywhere but you don't see them.

Three times this week I've ridden through police tape in Brixton. Monday morning, Wednesday morning and this afternoon. Three times the whole place was at a standstill. Three times the air ambulance was landed on Rush common. Three times young West Indian boys had been shot. I've got 2 links I can't even find a link for the third shooting.

Monday morning

Thursday Afternoon

This comes two months after a 17 year West Indian boy was shot in the chest at point blank range and died at the end of our road and one month after a car had it's tyres shot out again at the end of our road.

There's a gang war going on all around us and no one's talking about it. Sorry, everybody round here's talking about it, but nobody important. Why? They're closing down schools because of this shit.

Six, that's dreadful, but all too common nowadays I fear. That area was so different when my parents lived there in the 1940's.
I don't blame you for wanting to get out of London.

It's one thing when you see it on the news but quite another when it happens so close to home. In May there was a murder in the car park of a local beauty spot where we go quite a lot in the summer. It was a real shock.

I've just realised I've got the links round the wrong way.

It's so sad how some things just get completely overlooked because their not deemed "important" or "interesting" enough.

It's horrific.

As you know I'm from Wandsworth and now live in Guernsey where-nothing-much-ever-happens.

Actually though, a couple of weeks ago a 20 yr old was stabbed/beaten to death in St. Peter Port High St at 9 at night.

An American was murdered and cut into parts, some of which were dumped in a skip in Copenhagen Easter 2005. Oh, and it all happened in the next street to where I lived, 5 minutes from where the Queen lives. Central Copenhagen turning into south central LA

We moved out of West London when Alex was a baby, largely because his mother was horrified by an exchange among a group of women sitting in the Pub. One of their friends wasn't present but the demise of the absent one's daughter was the topic of the day. They considered themselves a cut above the Absentee and her daughter...

"No, love" says one, "you expect your son's to do a bit of time, but not your daughters."

With that attitude, there is no hope of your kids avoiding it. You can't keep them apart from their peers at school, (unless you turn them into sad little geeks) so we moved.

Defeatist. Yes. But my son was far too important to attempt some vigilante social engineering with him as a guineapig!

Nowhere is safe, but Six, your area is getting publicity now, and it must be horrible for you and your family.

Here in so called peaceful leafy area ..Highgate-ish in London....
an elderly couple had their throats cut and were killed 3 minutes away.

A few doors away a woman was stabbed to death.

2 years ago a woman was raped and killed on a patch of green outside
a row of magnificent Georgian homes, that's down the road too.

If it's dark, and I need to post a letter I take a kitchen knife in my pocket, my right hand on the handle the whole time.

Oh I forgot, a girl was murdered in the next street a few years ago as well.

oh well, thumbs down for Manchester then. Two of the admissions to one of the hospitals last night were (1) a woman who had been stabbed through the heart at a party and (2) a man whose nephew had bitten off his entire ear when the uncle tried to prevent him from beating up his own mother.

Then again...you'd feel more at home there than in Guildford. God, Surrey is dull and your children would end up saying they were from "Surrah"

The problem though Six, is that it doesn't matter where you live, violent death is never far away. There have been some horrendous murders within a 20 mile radius of where I live in the last 12 months but because they don't involve guns and gangs they don't make national news and that is far worse imho, than guns and gangsters. Someone the victim (s) knew killed them by knife or fire or fist and it isn't newsworthy in the slightist.
